Gardening

We have a great interest in gardening here at Westayre. Although you might not think of the Shetland climate as ideal for growing plants, it is surprisingly temperate and we can often grow things that is difficult in warmer climes.

At Westayre there is a garden area in front of the house which has expanded over the years. We have many types of bushes, shrubs, trees and plants. There is also a separate area we call the 'yard' where we have a greenhouse where we grow a lot of begonias and geraniums in hanging baskets. There is a large area in the traditional croft style where we grow our own vegetables . Among this are tatties, carrots, kale, neeps, onions, peas strawberries and gooseberries. We are always experimenting and expanding our knowledge.
